This quaint Swiss town is one of our favorites - we love to see the painted building facades, traditional iron and guided street signs, and flags waving proudly.
The town itself is a great place to buy souvenirs - if you’re in the market for that. We especially like the traditional Appenzell black and white hand-cut artwork (though pricey - it's incredible). Also typical for this area, we love the Folk-art / peasant paintings of the cows coming down from the mountain.
Beyond the town itself though, we love the Appenzell district for its beautiful landscape - the rolling pastures, wildflowers... Not to mention the Appenzell Schaukäserei (“show cheese dairy”) is about a ten minute drive outside of town and we can’t seem to eat enough cheese. Also, one of our favorite hikes of all time was in the Appenzell district - keep scrolling!
Know Before You Go!

Ebanalp & Seealpsee
After visiting the town of Appenzell we drove a short 10 minutes to the Wasserauen-Ebenalp Cable Car Station for our next adventure. Don't even think about skipping the next section- it ranks among our top places we have ever visited. Gorgeous views, stunning spring wildflowers and incredible hikes!
