Nestled in Germany’s only Alpine National Park, Berchtesgaden, Königssee is one of the most beautiful places we have seen in Germany to date. Everyone we meet raves about Bodensee, but the landscape surrounding Königssee’s rises high above Bodensee, literally. The water here might not be as warm as Bodensee, but it is known for it’s clean water and rich color.
We spontaneously stopped here after checking out the nearby Kehlsteinhaus / The Eagle’s Nest (just 10 minutes away!) and enjoyed a nice lake-side lunch.
We hope to come by again and enjoy many of the hikes in the Berchtesgaden area, hopefully spot some Steinbach (Ibex), and perhaps even rent a canoe or take a boat tour of the lake.
Know Before You Go!
- This gem is located just 10 minutes away from the Documentation Center Obersalzburg (Kehlsteinhaus/Eagle's Nest).
- We parked in a paid lot at the end of the road (literally). Outside the Tourist Information Center.
- There are amenities for visitors - the pedestrian street leading down to the lake is flanked with tourist shops and cafes. There are restrooms located in the parking area (for a fee, I'm sure)
