Perhaps the most beautiful bookstore in the world, Livraria Lello wows visitors with its old world charm and whimsical design. Between the stunning stained glass skylight, intricate tracery ceiling designs, art-nouveau detailing, and incredibly unique staircase, you won’t know where to look first. Established by brothers José Lello and António Lello in 1906, Livraria Lello but dates back as far as 1881 under previous partnerships, names and locations in Porto. J.K. Rowling lived in Portugal during the early 1990s and is said to have visited the bookstore often, and it’s speculated that elements of the bookstore inspired scenery depicted in the Harry Potter novels and film series.
Know Before You Go!
Due to Livraria Lello’s small size and overwhelming amount of visitors, a ticket/voucher is required to enter the bookshop. Tickets can be purchased in the gift shop on the corner (a few doors down from Livraria Lello) for 4 euro (as on February 2017). Once you’ve purchased your ticket, you can queue to enter the bookshop. We didn't wait long, but depending on the time of day, the lines can be lengthy. If you purchase a book while in the shop, the cost of the voucher/ticket will be deducted from your total.
